Raising Financially Smart Children - Greenlight Debit Card

In partnership with Greenlight all opinions are my own.

Growing up, we never really talked about money in my household. My dad’s message was to work hard and save while my mom would say if you die, you can’t take the money with you. Very conflicting, right?! Well, this led down a path of being unclear on how to spend my money and making mistakes that I don’t  want my children to ever have to encounter. Greenlight has made it easy for me to teach them smart money habits such as; saving, investing, and spending!

A little over a year ago, I decided to get Kaydence, my 13 year old, a debit card but I didn’t want it to be attached to mine. While also teaching her responsibility and if she didn’t have enough money, she wouldn’t have mom's money for back up. Greenlight was the perfect option for us, it provided a way for me to manage how much money I give her and see where she’s spending it. Greenlight was designed with children aged 8-18 years old in mind. It’s their first debit card!

Pro Tip: On the days you get paid you can manually or auto load money to their account. No more searching for allowance money - it's all digital!

The app is really easy to use, even for someone that’s not technology savvy. There is a parent's side and a children’s side. I am able to keep funds in my parent wallet to easily transfer over whenever she needs it. I definitely see this coming in handy when she starts going out with friends. I have it linked to my debit card and with the push of a button I can transfer funds to her account.

One of my favorite features of the app is I can set spending limits. My daughter loves to pick out her own things, so I give her money and a budget. She’s not only learning that things cost money but she has quickly realized what items are worth it.

Are you worried that you won’t feel like your kid is really earning the money? No worries, I love that the app sends me a reminder before my child’s payday to ask if they’ve done their assigned chores for the week. If they haven’t, you have the option to pause the payment until completed!

Greenlight offers plans for every budget! Not sure about another subscription? This one is worth it! When I load money my fees are deducted from my parent wallet. I don’t have to worry about something coming out of my checking account.
